LOWELL, Mass. — July 15, 2015 — NetNumber announced today an expanded SS7 Firewall application in its TITAN Centralized Signaling and Routing Control (CSRC) platform. The NetNumber SS7 Firewall application provides multi-layer SS7 protocol stack threat evaluation (MTP3 layer, SCCP layer, TCAP layer, MAP/INAP/AIN layer) and augments and enhances other SS7 applications available on TITAN including STP, HLR/AuC and IN-SCP. Leveraging the flexible, customer-defined logic inherent in NetNumber TITAN, operators now can close security threats as soon as they are discovered rather than waiting for an updated software release. The release of the SS7 Firewall Application is one of the many that play a key role in the TITAN subscriber data management (SDM) vision.

In the SS7 network, trust is the basis for network operation. However, the threat landscape has become more sophisticated and now includes attacks on the SS7 network. Operators have opened up information sources like the HLR to facilitate mobility within and across network(s), along with procedures to query and return information. In an environment where trust is the premise for operation, many protocols and procedures are not capable of detecting fraudulent activity. Attempts at creating internal security within the SS7 stack have been done, but have proven to be easily circumvented by existing and emerging threats. As operators transition to next-generation networks using Diameter- or SIP-based communications, interworking of signaling control protocols complicates security and exposes further threats.

According to Deborah Kish, principal analyst, and Lawrence Pingree, research director at Gartner, “CSPs, like most large enterprises, use a layered approach to security, and a firewall is an important part of the security ecosystem. Wireless CSPs rolling out VoLTE and LTE-A will need to put in place components and configurations to ensure quality of service, prevent legitimate network failures and fend off malicious attacks.” (Competitive Landscape: Carrier- Class Network Firewalls, October 16, 2014)

“Increasingly, telecom operators are under pressure to protect the data of their customers,” said Matt Rosenberg, vice president of NetNumber Global Sales, Solution Design, and Product Management. “Signaling firewalls have become an essential asset of an operator’s overall security strategy, even more so with the advent of mobility and authentication tied to different types of roaming. As the threats and vectors to gain network access are ever changing, any security system must be able to change swiftly and efficiently. NetNumber has responded to this urgent customer requirement by delivering the SS7 Firewall application in TITAN.”

TITAN provides a common, virtualized infrastructure for all signaling control, routing policy enforcement and subscriber database services in the network. It uniquely delivers centralized provisioning and management combined with a powerful distributed, in-memory database replication method that enables all signal processing to happen at the optimal location in an operator’s network. TITAN is transforming how operators deliver new services to their customers while significantly simplifying the network core and reducing operating costs. Today, TITAN is deployed on more than 350 servers on five continents, and supports more than 200 billion transactions per month.
