Robocalling has become a big problem in the United States, with tens of billions of unwanted calls being generated every year. According to a survey conducted by Consumer Reports in 2018, 70% of US consumers say they won’t answer the phone if they don’t recognize the calling number. Robocallers are using a multitude of tactics, including Caller ID spoofing, to convince the recipient to pick up the phone.
Robocallers are getting smarter in the way in which they overcome the technical solutions meant to stop them. For example, a simple Caller ID blacklist process can be circumvented by switching to a new Caller ID. This process also affects the legitimate owner of the Caller ID which was spoofed.
Communication Service Providers (CSPs) can enhance the user experience of their customers by implementing the NumeriRisk service. This is powered by advanced algorithms that determine for each call, if it has the potential to be fraudulent and if so, labels it as “scam possible” or “scam likely”. The subscribers receiving such a call can then decide to answer it or not.
NetNumber has partnered with First Orion, a market leader in call identification services, to deliver best-in-class fraudulent call detection. This is made possible by advanced algorithms and a data feed updated every six minutes.
Customers with a TITAN deployment can use the NumeriRisk data to implement Dynamic Call Filtering. This is an add-on application for carriers with existing TITAN routing deployments or it can be used as a TITAN query solution for carriers with other core network routing deployments. At the center of Dynamic Call Filtering lies the Scam Risk Registry provided by First Orion. The Scam Risk Registry marks fraudulent calls as “scam possible” or “scam likely” and enables carriers to implement processing rules for calls above a certain threshold. For example, unwanted calls with the maximum score of “scam likely” can be blocked or redirected.
and protects phone subscribers from robocallers and fraud
NumeriRisk is powered by a rich data set and advanced algorithms in order to predict the likelihood of fraud for each individual call.
Real-Time Threat Detection
The data feed used by NumeriRisk is updated every six minutes, so it reflects the call patterns in real-time. This brings a huge advantage when compared to static or after-the-fact call analysis.
With the First Orion data source, stored in the NetNumber data centers close to the customers’ location in AWS or even on customer’s premises, NumeriRisk is capable of the fastest response times in the industry.
Robocall and Wangiri Detection
CSPs using either TITAN or another core network routing deployment can integrate the NumeriRisk data for the purpose of implementing processing rules for calls above a certain scam risk score.
NumeriRisk can be deployed as a cloud service, in AWS or on-premise.
Fully Redundant – Managed Service
NetNumber operates a fully redundant service which is managed 24×7. This ensures that you will receive carrier-grade service availability and performance all the time.
Presenting the NumeriRisk Information
NetNumber is enabling CSPs to display scam risk information to their subscribers. Most operators benefit from onsite deployment, where the carrier-grade TITAN platform and the onboard Scam Risk Registry copy resides. This onsite deployment ensures the lowest possible latency and keeps the NumeriRisk database fresh by retrieving regular updates from the NetNumber servers.
The Caller ID of each incoming phone call is looked up in the local Scram Risk Registry copy. If a match is found, the corresponding information, “Scam Possible” or “Scam Likely”, is shown on the display of the device used by the call recipient.
Service Routing (Messaging / Voice)
Dynamic Call Filtering
Dynamic Call Filtering is an add-on application for carriers with existing TITAN routing deployments. It can be also used as a TITAN query solution for carriers with other core network routing deployments. At the center of Dynamic Call Filtering lies the NumeriRisk Registry provided by NetNumber. This ranks fraudulent calls and labels them as “Scam Possible” and “Scam Likely” respectively. The Dynamic Call Filtering service logic runs on the TITAN signaling control platform. With the NumeriRisk Registry input, it enables carriers to implement processing rules for calls above a certain scam risk threshold. For example, unwanted calls can be blocked or redirected.
Risk scoring of telephone numbers is essential for fraud prevention purposes. Different data points give useful information about the risk associated with certain actions, for example a service sign-up attempt or a financial transaction. With NumeriRisk, fraud prevention algorithms can attach a higher risk to phone numbers that have been recently involved in scam calls.
